Event Review - 7 July 2011 futurefinest Lymestone Brewery Tour

I write this as I suffer from the effects of the beer tasting and tour of Lymestone Brewery! Brad the Brewer began with a history of how he started up Lymestone Brewery including that he established the business in a previous brewery building from the 1900’s. For those of you who drink the products you will realise that they are all named in someway after Stone including one of the more popular Ein Stein beers (being German for ‘In Stone’). My particular favourite was their honey beer ‘Stone Brood’ with the honey coming from their own beehives situated on the roof of the building.
Brad invests a significant amount of time into the local community and at the time of our visit had two work experience students from Elaine’s School in Stone. He took great pleasure in telling us how part of their experience is to climb inside the vat to dig out the finings. The tasting and handling of the Malt and Hops was following by a tour of the vats and a detailed explanation of the brewing process. This was then followed with a beef stew made from local beef stewed in Lymestone’s’ beer. It was absolutely delicious and again evidence of how Brad supports his local community. The fining is given to the local farmer free of charge and in return the farmer supplies Brad with fresh produce.
The tour ended with a raffle for Brad’s daughter who will shortly be visiting South Africa as a volunteer aid worker involved in tasks such as building schools. Myself and futurefinest wish her the best in her visit.
I would recommend a visit to Lymestone Brewery to see how a local brewery works, but also to hear Brad and his entrepreneurial tales.
